OUR HISTORY

Weeroona has been part of the Gympie community since 1989, growing from a shared understanding that people with disability and their families needed greater access to meaningful, personalised support.

Our journey began through community consultation, public engagement, and local surveys that highlighted the need for more responsive services in the region. In 1990, a dedicated working group came together to help secure funding and build the foundations for support that would reflect the real needs of individuals and families.

In 1991, Weeroona Association Inc was officially established, supported by funding through the Home and Community Care Program. This marked the beginning of our commitment to providing practical, person-centred care that helps people feel valued, included, and supported.

As community needs continued to grow, so did Weeroona. In 1999, funding from Disability Services Queensland helped establish the Family Support Program, providing important support for families of children with disability who were navigating complex needs and challenges.

In 2001, the Moving Ahead Program was introduced, later becoming Post School Services. This program supported young adults as they transitioned from school into adult life, helping them build confidence, develop life skills, explore education and training opportunities, and participate more fully in their community.

The introduction of the National Disability Insurance Scheme in 2019 marked another important chapter in Weeroona’s history. With the NDIS came greater choice and control for participants and families, allowing people to shape their supports in ways that better reflected their goals, preferences, and aspirations.

Today, Weeroona continues to support people of all ages and abilities across the Gympie and Sunshine Coast regions. While our services have grown and changed over time, our purpose remains the same: to walk alongside you, provide support that is flexible and meaningful, and help create opportunities for you to live life your way.

As we look to the future, we remain proud of our history and deeply committed to building a community where people feel connected, empowered, and supported to thrive.
